Canadian Copper Wire Buyer's Guide — PTI Cables Inc.

Canadian Copper Wire Buyer's Guide.

Choosing the right copper building wire for a Canadian electrical project means understanding voltage ratings, insulation types, CSA requirements, and installation conditions. This guide covers the most common wire types used in Canadian residential and commercial construction, and helps you select the right product for your application.

In Canada, electrical wire must comply with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and carry CSA certification. Unlike the United States, where NEC governs electrical installations, Canadian electricians work under provincial electrical codes that reference the CEC. All wire sold in Canada must be CSA certified — this is not optional.

Wire is identified by three key properties: the conductor material (copper or aluminum), the insulation type (XLPE, PVC, etc.), and the voltage and temperature rating. Canadian wire markings include the AWG size, the mm² equivalent, the product designation (e.g., RW90, NMD90), the CSA file number, and the rated voltage.

Single Conductor Wire: RW90, RWU90, and T90Fil à conducteur unique: RW90, RWU90 et T90

Single conductor wires are used for conduit installations in commercial and industrial projects, and for service entrance applications. They are pulled through conduit runs rather than being sold pre-jacketed with multiple conductors.

RW90

600V · XLPE insulation · 14 AWG to 2 AWG · Dry and wet locations · Black wires S/R rated all sizes · 6 & 8 AWG S/R all colours. Best for: general conduit work, service panels, commercial branch circuits.

RWU90

1000V · Thick XLPE insulation · 14 AWG to 2 AWG · Dry and wet locations · Direct earth burial approved · All colours S/R all sizes. Best for: underground service entrance, direct burial runs, higher voltage applications.

T90 / THHN / THWN-2 / TWN75

600V · PVC insulation + nylon jacket · 14 AWG to 2 AWG · Also rated THHN, THWN-2, TWN75 · Available in 9 colours. Best for: conduit work requiring smooth pull-through, projects specifying THHN/THWN, multi-conductor conduit runs.

Jacketed multi-conductor cables are the standard for residential wiring in Canada. They contain two or three insulated conductors plus a bare copper ground wire, all enclosed in a protective jacket. They are faster to install than single conductors in conduit and are the default choice for most residential electrical work.

NMD90

300V · PVC insulation + nylon coating · 14 AWG to 3 AWG · 2C and 3C · Interior dry locations only · Colour-coded jackets by size (white=14, yellow=12, orange=10). Best for: all standard Canadian residential interior wiring — bedrooms, living areas, kitchens (non-underground). 300V · Isolation PVC + nylon · 14 AWG à 3 AWG · 2C et 3C · Emplacements secs intérieurs seulement · Gaines codées par couleur (blanc=14, jaune=12, orange=10).

NMWU

300V · Thick PVC insulation · 14 AWG to 6 AWG · 2C and 3C · Wet and dry locations · Direct earth burial approved · Black UV-resistant jacket marked SUN/SOL RESISTANT. Best for: outdoor wiring, underground runs to detached garages or sheds, below-grade installations.

Bare copper conductors are used for equipment grounding, bonding, and earthing in electrical construction. PTI Cables Class B stranded bare copper is manufactured to ASTM B3 and B8 standards in soft (annealed) temper, which provides the ductility needed for bending around lugs and terminal screws without cracking.

How to Read a Canadian Wire LabelComment lire une étiquette de fil canadien

A typical RW90 label reads: 12 AWG 3.31mm² RW90 XLPE LL49446 [S/R if applicable] (-40°C) 600V CSA DD/MM/YY HH:MM 12 AWG 3.31mm² Une étiquette RW90 typique se lit: 12 AWG 3.31mm² RW90 XLPE LL49446 [S/R si applicable] (-40°C) 600V CSA JJ/MM/AA HH:MM 12 AWG 3.31mm²
